Powerful Prayers to Pray for Patriot Day
Today is Patriot Day, the 16th anniversary of 9-11, when al-Qaida terrorists attacked the U.S., hijacking passenger airplanes and flying them into each of the twin towers of the World Trade Center in New York City and the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. A fourth plane went down in a Pennsylvania field after passengers attempted to regain control. Nearly 3,000 people were killed in the terrorist attacks.
September 11, 2001 was a day of terrible tragedy in our country, but also a time when people laid down their lives for one another. We became acutely aware at that time that we were a country in need of healing and we acted. We realized how important it was to love one another. We stepped out of our comfort zones to console one another. We prayed for the healing of our country and our world.
Today, on Patriot Day, let us continue to to pray for the victims of violence and terrorism throughout the world and for their families that they will find comfort and peace. Let us continue to reach out to one another in love and pray to Our Mother for the healing of our country. Mary, Queen of peace, pray for us! Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!
PRAYER OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI
Ground Zero, New York
Sunday, April 20, 2008
O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on us, people of many different faiths and traditions,
who gather today at this site,
the scene of incredible violence and pain.
We ask you in your goodness
to give eternal light and peace
to all who died here–
the heroic first-responders:
our fire fighters, police officers,
emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service brought them here on September 11, 2001.
We ask you, in your compassion
to bring healing to those who, because of their presence here that day,
suffer from injuries and illness.
Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope.
We are mindful as well
of those who suffered death, injury, and loss on the same day at the Pentagon and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Our hearts are one with theirs as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering.
God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth.
Turn to your way of love
those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred.
God of understanding,
overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events.
Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost here may not have been lost in vain.
Comfort and console us,
strengthen us in hope,
and give us the wisdom and courage
to work tirelessly for a world
where true peace and love reign
among nations and in the hearts of all.
– Pope Benedict XVI
Prayer to Our Lady of Fatima for Peace
Dear Mother Mary,
We come before you today to ask your help in healing our country. We pray for all those who suffer and are victims of violence and terrorist acts. We ask you to fill our hearts with peace and use us as instruments of peace each day. Draw us ever closer to your Immaculate Heart and to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Fill us with all the graces neccessary to be conduits of His love and mercy to those in our family, in our community, and in our world. We offer up our small sufferings and sacrifices to you this day to bring an end to war and violence and for the conversion of sinners. Immaculate Heart of Mary, pray for us! Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us!
Pray the Rosary today and everyday for the conversion of sinners and for world peace.
