Review of Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls
Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls by Brian Kennelly and Rick Rotundi is the story of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God, and her battle for souls with Lucifer, the fallen angel.
“Mary was the woman whom God dreamed of before the world was made” (Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen). From all eternity, God planned that the Incarnation would happen through Mary, her fiat, her “Yes.” In doing so, she was at direct odds with the angel who said “No.” Thus, God placed enmity between Mary and the devil, initiating a battle between them that has raged throughout history to the present time.
In this beautifully illustrated book, we learn about Mary’s gentleness and what a perfect mother she is for the Son of God and for the Church. Kennelly and Rotundi take us on a spiritual and historical journey, accompanying Mary from her Immaculate Conception through all the joys and sorrows of her life to the assumption to the present day. The story begins with the war in heaven when Lucifer and his rebel angels refuse to serve God.
Kennelly and Rotundi take us back in time to the Battle of Lepanto, where Mary protects her Christian children and rewards them with victory in what would have been an overwhelming defeat without her intercession. At Guadalupe, Mary frees a captive people from a religion which mercilessly murders the innocent. At Lourdes, she heals a broken nation spiritually and physically, renewing their faith in God. At Fatima, she prescribes a way to return world peace and to convert souls. She shows us that hell is real and reveals that without prayer and penance, many souls will go there. At Fatima, Our Lady predicts the rise of Communism, the Second World War, and the assassination attempt on Pope John Paul II. When he consecrates the world to her Immaculate Heart in union with all the bishops of the world, the Berlin Wall falls, the Soviet Union collapses, and the cold war ends.
The final chapter of the book deals with how Satan continues to slither throughout the world, making his presence known by weakening our culture’s mores and specifically, by attacking marriage and the family. However, we are reassured that the Queen of Heaven will continue to fight for the salvation of our souls and in the end, will be victorious.
Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls is a beautifully illustrated book, filled with full- color paintings and photographs, which conveys the remarkable story of Mary in a clear, comprehensive manner, strongly supported by Marian doctrine, papal encyclicals, Scripture passages, saint quotes, and Church-approved miracles. Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls is an inspiring and intriguing book that your entire family will treasure for years to come.
The Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls DVD set is a documentary-style program on the Blessed Virgin Mary narrated by Catholic actor Leonardo Defilippis. It is filmed in multiple locations and Marian shrines including the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, the World Apostolate of Fatima Shrine, and the Saint John Paul II National Shrine.
The Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls DVD set consists of four separate discs. Disc 1 is entitled Mother of the Church and consists of four separate episodes, which run for a total of 115 minutes. In this disc, we are shown how Mary is at enmity with the devil. The DVD also delves into the deeper meaning of her annunciation, her sorrows and her “dark night of the soul,” and explains why she is our Queen and Mother of the Church.
Disc 2 is entitled Guadalupe and runs 31 minutes. In this disc, we learn the details of the miracle that took place at Guadalupe. This is an intriguing video, as it compares the Aztec culture of the 1500’s to our present-day culture.
Disc 3, entitled Lourdes, takes us back in time to the French Revolution. The faith suffered greatly during this time under Napoleon, but in 1858, Mary appeared to a sickly peasant girl and restored the Catholic faith in France, healing the people both spiritually and physically. The run time for this video is 30 minutes.
Disc 4 is entitled The Story of Fatima, the Apparition That Changed the Course of History. It runs for 27 minutes. This DVD is my favorite because it seems to contain the message that is most relevant for us today. At Fatima, Our Lady not only appeared to the three shepherd children to prescribe prayer and penance to bring about world peace and conversion, but she warned them of a much more devastating war to come, the rise of Communism, and of persecution to the Church. Her message was confirmed by the great Miracle of the Sun, which occurred on October 13, 1917 — one hundred years ago. There are amazing photographs of Pope St. John Paul II in this disc that will melt your heart.
The Queen of Heaven: Mary’s Battle for Souls book and DVD set are both excellent resources for individuals and families, adult and youth formation, home schooling, as well as parish and diocesan libraries. I highly recommend both the book and the DVD set to anyone who desires to develop a closer relationship with their Heavenly Mother.
