Stirring Slumbering Souls: A Book Review
Stirring Slumbering Souls by Mr. Michael Seagriff, O.P. is a collection of 250 Eucharistic reflections designed to “set hearts, minds, and souls aflame with love and reverence” for Christ in the Eucharist. He shares quotes from the spiritual giants of our time, some of which include: St. Padre Pio, Venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen, Pope St. John Paul II, St. Teresa of Avila, St. Teresa Benedicta of the Cross, St. Catherine of Siena, St. Mother Teresa of Calcutta, and many more.
Here is a sample of what you can expect to find in this inspirational treasury of quotes: “All my sermons are prepared in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament. As recreation is most pleasant and profitable in the sun, so homiletic creativity is best nourished before the Eucharist. The most brilliant ideas come from meeting God face to face. The Holy Spirit that presided at the Incarnation is the best atmosphere for illumination. Pope John Paul II keeps a small desk or writing pad near him whenever he is in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament; and I have done this all my life – I am sure for the same reason he does, because a lover always works better when the beloved is with him (Love Dreams – Venerable Fulton J. Sheen).
As a strong devotee of Eucharistic adoration, Seagriff is highly motivated to spread his zeal for this devotion with others. He has witnessed its benefits, as have others who share their experiences in the appendix of Stirring Slumbering Souls. This is one of the many testimonies you will find there: “Adoration is a resting place for my tired, hurried body and it is almost like I am transformed into a better person but then I am turned out into the world and by the next week, I am ready for adoration and to be renewed. Adoration has made a positive difference in my life. I am thankful for God’s goodness and I have seen miracles take place around me.”
Stirring Slumbering Souls is an eloquent treasury of Eucharistic reflections which you will enjoy reading over and over again. I read the reflections during Eucharistic adoration and just before bedtime. They were comforting, peaceful, insightful, and gave me a new appreciation and love for the Eucharist. I highly recommend this book for all who desire to grow in their love of Jesus in the Eucharist.
